420 Festival

Umbrella term for gatherings held annually on April 20 to mark "4/20." Largest recurring sites include Hippie Hill in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park (Robin Williams Meadow, formerly Sharon Meadow), a Summer-of-Love-era gathering place that became an unpermitted 4/20 ritual and was formally permitted from 2017 under organizer Sounds Bazaar, with attendance near 20,000 before cancellations in 2024–2026 citing budget and industry-sponsorship shortfalls; the Mile High 420 Festival / 420 Rally in Denver's Civic Center Park, which began in the early 1990s as a legalization protest and grew after 2012 into a free concert drawing tens of thousands adjacent to the state Capitol; the University of Colorado Boulder Norlin Quad smokeout, historically among the nation's largest campus gatherings until CU administrators closed the quad to non-students in 2012; and the Vancouver Art Gallery 4/20 in British Columbia, a civil-disobedience protest that ran annually from 1995 before relocating.
