Bred in the San Francisco Bay Area c. 2013–2014 by Mario Guzmán ("Mr. Sherbinski") in collaboration with the Cookies Fam; the Sherbinskis brand launched in 2014 in Los Angeles. Lineage: Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint GSC. The first widely celebrated phenotype, Gelato #33 (nicknamed "Larry Bird" for the Celtics player's jersey number), was followed by celebrated cuts including Bacio Gelato (#41), Mochi (#47), and Açai Berry (#49). Named Leafly's Strain of the Year in 2018. Alongside Cookies and Wedding Cake, Gelato is one of the three foundational strains of the modern dessert-hybrid era and parent of Runtz (× Zkittlez), Jealousy, and Biscotti. Sherbinskis became one of the first cannabis lifestyle brands with packaging design resembling luxury goods, helping formalize the breeder-as-auteur model in legal markets.
