Home cultivation

Home cultivation (also "homegrow" or "personal cultivation") is the state-authorized activity of growing cannabis plants at one's private residence for personal use, without a commercial license. Most adult-use states authorize home cultivation for adults 21+, typically within plant-count limits, out of public view, and in a secured location inaccessible to minors. Adult-use states that prohibit home cultivation include Washington State, New Jersey, Delaware, and Illinois (where only registered medical patients may cultivate). Common plant limits: 6 plants per adult with a 12-plant household cap (Colorado, Nevada, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Ohio), 3 mature + 3 immature per adult (New York, Rhode Island), or lower household-only caps (Maryland 2/household; Vermont 2 mature + 4 immature/household; Virginia 4/household). Maine is unique in permitting up to 3 mature, 12 immature, and unlimited seedlings per adult with no household cap. Medical-patient home cultivation is typically permitted even in states that restrict adult-use cultivation, and medical caregivers in some states may cultivate for multiple patients. Home cultivation is federally unauthorized under the CSA; Gonzales v.
