Atomizer

An atomizer is the heating element inside a vape cartridge, pod, or tank — the component that converts liquid oil into inhalable vapor. A typical atomizer consists of a resistance coil (or, in most modern cannabis hardware, a porous ceramic element), a wicking medium that draws oil from the reservoir to the heater, and metal leads that connect to the battery. Early cannabis atomizers used cotton or silica wicks wrapped around a resistance wire, a design repurposed from e-cigarettes and poorly suited to viscous cannabis oils, which tended to burn, clog, or leak. Around 2016, porous ceramic heating elements — sintered ceramic structures with nanoscale pores that wick oil evenly and heat it without a traditional coil — became the industry standard. Ceramic atomizers distribute heat more uniformly, handle thick oils and live resin better, preserve terpenes, and resist oxidation. Coil materials, ceramic porosity, airflow geometry, and wattage range all influence vapor quality.
