Lit

Adjective meaning intoxicated; past participle of light (Old English līhtan, "to ignite or illuminate"). The intoxication sense is attested from 1914 ("Lit up, intoxicated," per the OED and Online Etymology Dictionary), originally meaning drunk. Extended to drug intoxication by the 1930s (1933 American Speech: "under the immediate influence of the drug…all lit up"). By c. 2000 it broadened to "excellent" or "exciting," mainstreamed through 2010s African-American Vernacular English and hip-hop, and now coexists with cannabis and alcohol senses.
