Cannabis Cup

Competitive cannabis festival founded in 1988 by High Times editor-in-chief Steven Hager in Amsterdam, modeled on informal Northern California harvest festivals at which growers privately compared crops. The inaugural publicly organized competition was won by Cultivator's Choice's Skunk #1. Held each November, the event combined judged strain and hash categories — later Best Indica, Best Sativa, Best Hybrid, Best Nederhash, Best Imported Hash, Best Glass, Best Booth — with seminars, concerts, and, from 1997, the Counterculture Hall of Fame, whose first inductee was Bob Marley (posthumously). In 2010, Dutch police raided the Amsterdam venue; that June, High Times staged the first U.S. event, the Medical Cannabis Cup in San Francisco. Following the 2012 Colorado and Washington votes, adult-use Cups proliferated across U.S. legal markets (Denver, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Michigan, Las Vegas, Illinois, Massachusetts) and internationally, including a 2015 Jamaica "World Cannabis Cup." The continuous Amsterdam run effectively ended in 2014 amid tightening Dutch drug-tourism enforcement, with limited editions in 2017–2018. The Cup evolved alongside legalization from an underground gathering into a commercial industry competition — a microcosm of the broader commercial normalization of cannabis culture.
