Red eyes

A descriptive, non-metaphorical phrase — also "weed eyes," "stoned eyes," "high eyes" — for the bloodshot conjunctivae caused by cannabis. Not a coined slang term but a long-standing observational compound in English. Earlier folklore blamed smoke irritation; modern pharmacology attributes it to THC-induced vasodilation, which is also the mechanism behind cannabis's demonstrated lowering of intraocular pressure in glaucoma applications. The phrase appears throughout 20th-century U.S. stoner, reggae, and hip-hop vernacular and has no subcultural ownership.
