At larger MSOs and multi-site operators, however, the titles can be hierarchically distinct: the Master Grower / Director of Cultivation holds portfolio-level authority over multiple facilities, genetics strategy, and budget ownership, while each facility has its own Head Grower or Site Head Grower serving as day-to-day team lead. Many veteran cultivators actively dislike the "master grower" title, considering it self-bestowed marketing language from the early legalization era, and prefer "head grower" or "director of cultivation." Assistant head grower is a common stepping-stone role typically paying $60,000–$90,000, with section growers below ($45,000–$75,000) managing specific rooms or bays. The dual-title structure is most common in Canadian licensed producers, Massachusetts MSOs, and multi-site Michigan and Illinois producers.
