Hermie

"Hermie" is grower vernacular for a hermaphrodite cannabis plant, particularly one expressing a small number of stress-induced staminate flowers ("nanners" — banana-shaped anthers) within an otherwise female inflorescence late in the flowering cycle. The term is informal and non-botanical but ubiquitous in cultivation discourse and grow-forum literature (Clarke 1981; Green 2005). In commercial contexts, identifying and culling hermies before anther dehiscence is critical because a single hermaphrodite can pollinate an entire sinsemilla room, triggering seed formation that destroys market value. Causes include unstable genetics (notably in poorly stabilized feminized lines), photoperiod disruption, heat and drought stress, physical wounding, and prolonged flowering past senescence (Punja 2021; Small 2015).
