METRC

METRC — Marijuana Enforcement Tracking Reporting Compliance — is the dominant state-mandated seed-to-sale cannabis track-and-trace system, developed and operated by Franwell Inc., a Lakeland, Florida-based RFID technology firm. METRC was first deployed in Colorado in 2011 for the state's medical program (expanded to recreational in 2014), becoming the first state-vendor cannabis tracking system in the U.S. Jurisdictions using METRC include Alaska, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, West Virginia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Per Franwell, METRC serves 300,000+ users across 39,000+ licensed operators and has logged over 5 billion events. Every plant and package receives a unique 24-digit RFID tag (color-coded by market type, readable 10–15 feet without line of sight). Tags cost roughly $0.25–$0.45 apiece, and operators pay monthly access fees.
