Tip
A tip is the commercial and industry term for a pre-cut or pre-rolled paper filter designed for insertion at the mouth end of a joint. Tips are sold in booklets and perforated strips, typically made from unbleached hemp-fiber paper or cardstock cut into rectangles roughly 18mm wide and 60mm long. Pre-rolled tips come already shaped into cylinders, eliminating the folding step for the user, while perforated strips provide fold lines for accordion-style assembly.
Variants include cone tips tapered to fit pre-rolled cones; glass tips, which are reusable, cool smoke slightly, and do not absorb cannabinoids; ceramic, wood, and silicone tips for reusability; and activated charcoal tips that filter additional tar. Common folding techniques for paper tips are the accordion or zig-zag "M" or "W" fold at one end — which improves filtration — and the simpler spiral cylinder roll, which provides structure but less filtration. The term "tip" tends to dominate in commercial and dispensary contexts, while "crutch" is more common among home rollers and in older cannabis literature, and "filter" functions as the generic term across both. → See also: Crutch, Filter, Papers.
