Bowl

Cannabis pipe showing the bowl where flower is packed

Bowl has two distinct meanings in cannabis vocabulary. As a component, the bowl is the concave chamber on a pipe or bong that holds ground flower for combustion. On a hand pipe the bowl is integral to the body; on a bong it is a removable "slide" with a standardized joint fitting (commonly 10mm, 14mm, or 18mm) and a hole at the base that allows smoke to travel down the stem. A metal or glass screen at the base prevents plant matter from being pulled through. As a unit of use, "a bowl" refers to one packed serving of flower — to "pack a bowl" is to fill the chamber, and a "cashed" bowl is fully combusted ash. Bowls are typically made of borosilicate glass, though ceramic, metal, wood, and stone are all standard. For optimal airflow and even burn, flower is packed looser at the base and firmer on top. On a bong, removing the bowl mid-draw functions as the carburetor, pulling fresh air through the chamber to clear accumulated smoke. → See also: Pipe, Bong, Flower (Part 3). ---
