Shake

Shake is the collection of small, loose pieces of cannabis flower that break off larger buds during handling, storage, and packaging. It is chemically and regulatorily distinct from trim: shake is naturally fallen bud fragment, while trim is deliberately cut leaf material. Because shake originates from bud tissue, it typically retains most of the source flower's potency and is sold at a discount primarily on aesthetic rather than chemical grounds. Oregon's OAR 845-025 groups shake and trim into a combined "Shake/Trim" inventory category, and when whole buds become mixed with shake/trim the entire lot is reclassified downward to the shake/trim category — the lower category governs. Commercial applications include discounted loose flower, pre-rolls, joint production, infused edibles, and feedstock for concentrates. Consumers also encounter "shake" as the residue at the bottom of an eighth or an ounce bag after the whole buds have been removed. → See also: Flower, Bud, Kief
