Solventless

Solventless is the category of cannabis concentrates produced without any chemical solvent — no butane, propane, hexane, ethanol, or CO₂. Extraction relies entirely on mechanical, thermal, and physical methods: sieving, agitation in ice water, heat, and pressure. The category encompasses kief, dry sift, bubble hash, ice water hash, rosin, hash rosin, and live rosin. The critical distinction most often confused by consumers is solventless versus solvent-free. Solventless means no chemical solvent was used at any stage of production. Solvent-free means a chemical solvent was used but has since been purged to non-detectable levels per residual-solvent testing. The industry adage captures this: "all properly processed concentrates are solvent-free, but not all are solventless." The water-as-solvent debate occasionally resurfaces — a minority position classifies bubble hash as solvent-extracted because water is a solvent — but industry consensus rejects the argument: cannabinoids and terpenes are hydrophobic and do not dissolve in water, which acts only as a mechanical agitation medium. ASTM Committee D37.04 work item WK60434 ("Specifications for Non-Solvent Based Cannabis Extraction Equipment") formalizes this category for standards purposes.
