Extract
Extract is a cannabis product produced using a solvent — chemical or physical — to dissolve and separate cannabinoids and terpenes from plant material. Common industry usage treats "extract" interchangeably with "concentrate," but Oregon is the exception and operates the only U.S. state-level framework that draws a legally distinct binary based on solvent class. Under Oregon's scheme, "cannabinoid extract" is a substance obtained by (a) hydrocarbon solvent — butane, hexane, propane — or (b) CO₂ with high heat or pressure. Examples include BHO, PHO, live resin, sauce, diamonds, and supercritical CO₂ oil. Oregon processors need a separate "extract" endorsement requiring stricter facility, engineering, and fire-code compliance; Oregon also bans Class I solvents and consumer canned butane from licensed operations. Other jurisdictions do not create an extract/concentrate binary. California's regulations treat extract as one example of a concentrate — 4 CCR §15000(h) — and §15000(x) defines "extraction" simply as "a process by which cannabinoids are separated from cannabis plant material through chemical or physical means."
