Live resin

Live resin concentrate — glossy, terpene-rich extract from fresh-frozen cannabis

Live resin is a hydrocarbon (butane, propane, or blend) concentrate produced from fresh, flash-frozen cannabis plant material rather than dried and cured flower, yielding high terpene retention and strain-true aroma. The term and method were coined and developed in Colorado by William "Kind Bill" Fenger with Jason "Giddy Up" Emo of EmoTek Labs. The concept originated around 2010, and the first commercial batch was produced in late 2013 using EmoTek's OBE-Dos extractor, pressure-rated to -10°F; the inaugural run blended Chem Dog, Chem #4, and Big Poppa OG trim. Production requires a tight cold chain. Biomass is flash-frozen within hours of harvest; extraction runs at cryogenic temperatures of -20°F to -50°F in a closed-loop hydrocarbon extractor within a C1D1 explosion-proof room. Purge is accomplished under deep vacuum at 80–89°F for approximately 72 hours, with the full extraction-to-finished-product process typically spanning 7–10 days. Finished live resin tests at 70–90% total cannabinoids, with terpene content typically 10–20% — and HTFSE live resin preparations reaching 13–40% terpenes. Texture variants include live sauce, live sugar, live budder, live diamonds, and live shatter. ⚠️ Marketing claims of "10× more terpenes" than cured concentrate are heuristic rather than laboratory-verified across all terpene classes. At least one published analysis found live resin contained 11% less sesquiterpenes by weight than non-live resin — not all terpene classes are preserved equally by the fresh-frozen method, even as monoterpenes are strongly protected. Consumers often confuse "live resin" with "live resin-style" — a category of distillate-plus-terpene vape carts that are not true hydrocarbon live resin. → See also: Live rosin, BHO, Sauce, Diamonds, Resin
