Bubble hash
Bubble hash is a solventless cannabis concentrate produced by agitating cannabis in ice water, breaking resinous trichome heads free from plant material, and filtering the slurry through a sequence of fine-mesh "bubble bags" of decreasing micron size. The name describes its behavior when dabbed: high-quality bubble hash bubbles and melts fully rather than charring. It is functionally synonymous with ice water hash, with "bubble hash" favored in consumer language and "ice water hash" in producer language. Production parameters are well standardized. Water temperature runs 32–35°F (0–2°C) during agitation; standard micron bag sizes step down through 25, 45, 73, 90, 120, 160, 190, and 220 µm. The work bag (190–220 µm) retains bulk plant material, while the full-melt "sweet spot" sits at 73–120 µm; 73 µm roughly matches the diameter of a mature trichome head. Agitation runs 5–15 minutes per wash, typically across 2–4 washes. Drying is accomplished via freeze-drying (the commercial standard) or by microplaning the collected hash onto parchment to air-dry. The modern ice-water method was developed across the late 1980s and 1990s. David "Skunkman Sam" Watson ran High Times advertisements for ice-hash methods in 1987–1988; Reinhard Delp filed a 1997 "Ice Cold-Xtractor" patent (CA2321815); Mila Jansen commercialized the Ice-O-Lator machine in the late 1990s; and Marcus "Bubbleman" Richardson of Fresh Headies standardized the 73 µm bag and the multi-bag kit in 1999. An informal 1–6 star grading scale — not ASTM-standardized — rates quality: 1–2 star is cooking grade, 3–4 star is half-melt, 5 star is near full-melt, and 6 star is full melt, which dabs completely with less than 5% residue. Quality is typically verified with a Q-tip or hash-flag test at 500–535°F. Potency runs 40–60% THC for typical lots; premium 6-star can exceed 70%. ⚠️ The "solventless" designation is occasionally challenged on the grounds that water is technically a solvent.
